This publication is produced in response to the numerous celebrations in 2022 that marked the first circumnavigation of the world in a sailing ship 500 years ago, lead by Ferdinand Magellan. five ships the Trinidad, The San Antonio, the Victoria, the Concepción, left the Spanish port of Sanlúcar de Barrameda in Sepetmber 1519, in search of the Moluccas or Spice Islands. In 1522 only one ship The Victoria returned lead by Juan Sebastián Elcano with only 18 crew members out of the original 270. The longest and most valuable record of the expedition was written by one of the survivors a young Italian sailor Antonio Pigafetta. Whose account is known as “His Relation”- although he inscribed his manuscript as follows: Navigation and discovery of Upper India and the Isles of Molucca, where the cloves Grow. By Antionio Pigafetta of Vicenza, Knight of Rhodes. Beginning in the year MDXIX. In 1975 the Bienecke Rare Book library of Yale published - Magellan’s Voyage - A narrative Account of the First Navigation. with a translation by Raskelton. it is this translation that became the Genesis of my project.
